Rich
in heritage and history featuring architectural splendor
dating back to the 1800's. Cobourg
is renowned as the 1996 Best Cities Citation recipient
by the Globe Mail for two consecutive years. Our community
is also the recipient of recognition in the 1996 Communities
in Bloom competition with an award for its gardens and
overall atmosphere.
Cobourg
has access to two major highways and it is serviced
by VIA rail allowing for easy travel to Toronto and
the airport. Our unique community includes a spectacular
natural beach, campgrounds, nature trails, park attractions,
festivals
and world class marina. You will find Cobourg an ideal
environment for all your leisure activities.
As
patron of the arts, Cobourg supports the Art Gallery
of Northumberland and an extensive Public Library and
Archive facility. The Cobourg community is complimented
with a variety of service clubs and it prospers with
over 60 manufacturing industries making it a major commerce
center for the region.
FEATURING
Victoria
Hall
Victoria Hall embodies the 19th century ambition of
Cobourg. Built to compete with the St. Lawrence Market
in Toronto, city promoters hoped their edifice would
lure government to the town. Now immaculately restored
the town hall provides space for arts, culture and entertainment
along with civic government.
Harbour
Gateway
The harbour, just a step south of Victoria Hall, is
a modern yachting facility that keeps alive the trading
traditions of the city. Cobourg was often the entry
point for settlers heading north into the Back
Country and even today you may be lucky to see
a tall ship gracing the docks reminding us of the past.
Graceful
Architecture
Originally settled by United Empire Loyalists, Cobourg
blossomed as the holiday home of a number of wealthy
Americans. Daily ferry service to Rochester, New York,
allowed steel magnates from Pittsburgh to enjoy the
healthful air. Town mansions from the Gilded Age are
spotted throughout the town and many look out over the
central park as if waiting for Gatsby to return.
Enjoy
the Sights and Sounds
Cobourg's beach is justly famous as are shops, accommodations,
award-winning restaurants and exceptional theatre productions.
The Farmers' Market is well worth a visit but many find
the simple pleasure of strolling the tree-lined streets
reason enough to return here year after year.
